How to Find Out If Someone Is in Jail in Hampton Roads

Bail Process Published July 3, 2026 · Bail With Family

Three free ways to check: search VINELink (Virginia's official custody database at vinelink.com), search Virginia's online court records for new charges, or call the jail directly — numbers for every Hampton Roads facility are below. Or skip all of it: call us at (757) 751-0964 and we'll locate them for you, free.

Option 1: VINELink — Virginia's custody database

VINELink is the official victim-notification network, and it doubles as a public inmate locator. Search by name and it shows whether the person is in custody and at which Virginia facility. It updates as jails process bookings — though brand-new arrests can take a few hours to appear.

Option 2: Virginia court records

Virginia's General District Court online case information system shows new charges, hearing dates, and bond status by name and jurisdiction. If charges appear but VINELink shows no custody, the person may have already bonded out or been released on recognizance.

Option 3: Call the jail

FacilityPhone
Hampton City Jail(757) 727-6614
Newport News City Jail(757) 926-8911
Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail(757) 253-4300
Norfolk City Jail(757) 664-4700
Virginia Beach Correctional Center(757) 385-8751
Chesapeake Correctional Center(757) 382-6159
Portsmouth City Jail(757) 393-8536
Western Tidewater Regional Jail(757) 514-7600
Riverside Regional Jail(804) 524-6600

Have ready: the person's full legal name and date of birth. Jails won't discuss charges in detail by phone, but they will confirm custody.

Option 4: Let us do it

Locating people in Hampton Roads jails is literally our day job. Call (757) 751-0964 with a name and date of birth and we'll find where they're held, what the charges are, and whether bail has been set — free, with no obligation to use our service.

Found them — now what?

  1. Note the facility, booking status, and whether bail is set
  2. Read what to do when someone is arrested for the first-hours checklist
  3. If bail is set, decide between cash bail and a bond — and call us to start the release
